Where Every Step is the Destination
The Camino isn’t a race—it’s a collection of moments. From Markina to Bilbao, the Way reveals monasteries hidden in valleys, oak and beech forests that breathe with silence, and villages where time slows down. This is where the Basque Country whispers its deepest secrets.

“On the SLOW Camino, you don’t conquer mountains—you let mountains conquer you.”
Day 6. Markina-Xemein – Munitibar (12 km)
Walking with Monks & Valleys
The path leaves Markina’s medieval stone behind and takes you deeper into rural Biscay. Here, silence is textured—broken only by streams and the chants of monks.

Slow Treasures:
- Ziortza Monastery: A pilgrim sanctuary where Gregorian chants echo at dusk.
- Gernika Oaks: Along the path, notice ancient oak groves—the same trees where Basque assemblies once met under open sky.
- Hidden Bakery: In Munitibar, ask for opilak, sweet bread rolls baked slowly overnight.
SLOW Ritual:
Pause at a valley stream. Pick one stone, close your eyes, and let it choose the pace of your breath.
Day 7. Munitibar – Gernika (14 km)
History as Companion
Guernikara
This stage weaves through meadows and farmhouses before descending to Gernika, the heart of Basque identity.
Unrushed Discoveries:
- The Assembly House & Sacred Oak: Where laws were sworn and democracy rooted. Stand still for five minutes to feel centuries pass.
- Peace Museum: Tells the story of Picasso’s Guernica and the bombing of 1937—reminding us that slowness is also about remembering.
- Local Flavor: Order goxua, a custard-and-cake dessert, and taste sweetness born from resilience.
SLOW Practice:
Before leaving Gernika, write one wish for peace in your journal. Carry it forward with each step.
Day 8. Gernika – Larrabetzu (16 km)
Quiet Valleys & Basque Hospitality
The path from Gernika to Larrabetzu unfolds like a gentle meditation: country roads, forest trails, and rolling green hills. It is a stage of balance—between the weight of history left behind in Gernika and the calm rhythm of Basque rural life.

Unrushed Journey:
- Green Horizons: Walk past meadows, oak groves, and distant mountain views where silence feels infinite.
- Village Life: Small hamlets welcome pilgrims with cider, tortilla de bacalao, and conversations that stretch unhurriedly.
- Larrabetzu’s Calm: A picturesque valley town with whitewashed houses and red-tiled roofs—an authentic pause before the road into the city.
SLOW Ritual:
At Larrabetzu, write down three things the silence of this stage taught you. Keep the note tucked in your journal until Santiago.
Day 9. Larrabetzu – Bilbao (13 km)
From Stillness to Vibrance
Leaving Larrabetzu, the Camino carries you gently through farmland and forest before the path slowly transforms into suburban streets. Step by step, the hum of Bilbao begins to reach your ears.Slow Travel Highlights:
- Final Forest Paths: A reminder of the countryside before entering the city.
- Basilica of Begoña: A climb of 300 steps—a ritual of gratitude before descending to the heart of Bilbao.
- The City Awakens: Bilbao greets pilgrims with contrasts: the cobbled Casco Viejo and the futuristic curves of Gehry’s Guggenheim.
SLOW Exercise:
Cross a bridge over the Nervión River. Pause, watch the reflection of sky and steel, and remind yourself: your Camino is not ending—it’s transforming.
Day 10. Rest Day in Bilbao
The Art of Stillness
Bilbao rewards pause. The city, reborn from industry into culture, proves transformation takes time—just like the Camino.
Must-Sees for the SLOW Pilgrim:
- Guggenheim Museum: Let Gehry’s curves teach you that even steel can flow.
- Doña Casilda Park: Perfect for a quiet afternoon journal session under magnolia trees.
- Mercado de la Ribera: Wander slowly through aromas of cheese, ham, and anchovies—provisions for the road ahead.

SLOW Ceremony:
At sunset, stand by the river and write a letter to yourself. Seal it and carry it until Santiago. Open it only when the journey ends.
The Wisdom of SLOW Walking (Part II)
Unwritten Rules of the Road Ahead:
- Treat silence as a language, not a void.
- Every village café is an invitation to listen, not just to eat.
- If a local offers directions, take them as a gift, not just guidance.
- Rest days are stages too—measured in breaths, not kilometers.
“Pilgrimage is not movement through space—it’s movement through soul.”
