1st Stage Camino Frances: Saint Jean Pied de Port – Logroño

Make your first steps on the Camino in both French and Spanish parts of the Basque Country and Navarra. Cross the Pyrenees, visit Pamplona and follow to La Rioja region. This part of the world is famous for its wines and excellent food.

Day 1
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Beautiful village in the French Pyrenees. Typical Basque houses, the Nive river with stone bridge… The pilgrim spirit fills in the village, everyone here is preparing to start the Camino. The pilgrims’ office will welcome you with the Credential (Pilgrim Passport) and information. Do not hesitate to go there and you will be officially registered as a pilgrim.

Day 2
Roncesvalles

After 25 km (16 miles) of pilgrimage, which will include crossing the Pyrenees, in the middle of the mountain you will reach Roncesvalles – the place when all Spanish pilgrims start their Camino. In the monastery of Roncesvalles every evening the pilgrims’ blessing is given.

Day 3
Zubiri

The Camino is starting to descend. On the kilometre 22 (13 mile) you will reach a Zubiri valley.

Day 4
Pamplona

We can bet this places sounds to you like a noise of thousands of people in white and red clothes running the bulls through narrow streets… But Pamplona is much more than bulls. It is also a place you must visit during your pilgrimage to Santiago.

Day 5
Puente la Reina/Gares

The name of this town means “The Queen’s Bridge” and indeed, upon entering the town you will cross the bridge built in the 11th century.

Day 6
Estella/Lizarra

You will cross medieval villages, old taverns and for a while you will even walk through original Roman road.

Day 7
Los Arcos

After a little climbing around Villamayor de Monjardín the Camino becomes easy again. A small village Los Arcos will be your last stop in Navarra region.

Day 8
Logroño

Last and longest day of your pilgrimage. There will be 28 kms (17,5 miles) to walk to reach Logroño. Logroño is the capital of the La Rioja – famous wine producer zone. It would be great to finish the pilgrimage with a glass of excellent red wine in the heart of La Rioja.
